Consumers International, Kuala Lumpur and Consumers Association of India in association with Madras Library Association organised a seminar on Access to Knowledge on 31st July, 2010 at the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Auditorium in Guindy, Chennai. The Principal Secretary to the Government of Tamil Nadu Department of Information Technology was the chief guest. Former Central Vigilance Commissioner N. Vittal gave the keynote address. Prof Subbiah Arunachalam, Nirmita Narasimhan and Pranesh Prakash participated in the seminar. Nirmita and Pranesh made presentations on access to knowledge.

When Stephen Hawksley the celebrated Disabled Scientist visited Delhi in 1990s, the Ministry of Social justice and Empowerment spent 87 lakhs to erect a temporary bridge so that he can view the Janthar mantar at delhi without any help.This access bridge was demolished once the visit was over.When there is crying need for proper foot paths for ordinary citizens, the Disability activists with may be assistance from builders lobby fought for accessibility of Vidhan Soudha and other Government departments in Bangalore .It got made but i doubt any wheel chair bound person in Bangalore ever traveled in Bangalore to use them. The real beneficiaries are the builders. When psycho social disabled in India was given a measely sum of 7 Lakhs(for all India), the access bridge for Hawksley was a criminal waste during that year. Youngsters in this Center must look at accessibility from the view point of Disabled and also practicability.
