This event, coordinated by the U.S. space agency NASA, is part of the U.S.'s programme to promote Open Government Partnership.

The challenge is grouped into four categories: Software Development, Open Hardware, Citizen Science Platforms and Data Visualisation. The contest aims at addressing strategic space exploration needs, a press release from CIS stated.
